I'm failing my own challenge to eat locally. It’s not that I didn’t try; it’s just that being conscious of what you eat takes a lot of effort. And with my hectic lifestyle, my schedule is always in flux and I’m never quite sure when I’ll be able to get home to make a home-cooked meal with local ingredients or be able to pack and consume a home lunch.

Plus, let’s be honest — there isn’t a large selection of alcoholic beverages made in Hawaii, so every beer or cocktail violates my daily eat-local challenge. But I’m giving it ONE more week and still need your help with recipes or advice of how to continue this effort to eat locally. So pretty please, with a Hawaiian cherry-on-top, send me your sustainable suggestions.

After a pretty mellow week I was ready for First Friday festivities and met a few of the guys for a beer atBar35. If you’re a beer enthusiast, you’ll enjoy the $3 bottle and draft beer specials during Happy Hour (4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and all night from opening to closing on Mondays). Another interesting feature at Bar35 is that they serve 40-ounce beers. The kind you get from the corner liquor store and drink out of a brown paper bag.

The Morning After: Locally Grown

I’ve been leisurely reading this book called “Lunch in Paris” by Elizabeth Bard. In between the pages of vivid descriptions of Parisian markets and the love story are dining experiences and French recipes with cooking techniques that would put my cooking to shame.

It’s not the best book to read while healing from my wisdom teeth as I’m still suffering through a practically all-liquid diet with the occasional treat of mushy foods like mac and cheese or mashed potatoes.

But this book got me thinking about Honolulu’s culinary community. With a big push for “farm to the table” dining, and emphasis on local foods — what is now a growing fad has always been in most of the world. We as Americans have become so accustomed to having choices, convenience, and luxury in our dining experiences when most dinners are made from whatever is available. I’ve realized that I don’t appreciate this commodity nearly as much as I should and in this coming week I’d like to challenge myself to only purchase locally produced food at the market and at any restaurants.

"I had so much planned for this weekend — from watching half-naked men play with fire to a delectable birthday dinner — but all plans went out the window when I started getting a severe migraine Wednesday night. It turned out that putting off having my wisdom teeth taken out all those years had finally caught up with me. I ended up spending the weekend reading books, sipping soup and being comforted by friends and family. So instead of boring you with my mundane weekend, I put my best friend on assignment. After saying “hot boys and fire,” it wasn’t difficult to convince her to cover a few events for me in between her hectic schedule as a stylist. I mean, what are best friends for?"

ARTafterDARK is the Honolulu Academy of Arts' monthly art party organized by a dynamic group of young volunteers dedicated to exploring the arts.

This month's all-star team of co-chairs are Natalie Aczon, Lacy Matsumoto, and Darlene Reynon.

Journey to the Maghreb on the Marrakech Express.

MUSIC+ENTERTAINMENT

DJ Nocturna sets a Middle Eastern tone. Central Courtyard, 6-9pm.

DJ Lacy from the Hot Mufins plays deep house in the Luce Pavilion, 6-9pm.

Phoenix Dance Project belly dancers will perform in Central, Kinau, and Banyan Courtyards, 7-9pm.

The Souk in Banyan Courtyard features Chai Studio, India Market, Whole Foods Kahala, and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art.

Come participate in Orvis artist-in-residence James Jack's installation by sculpting a cone that will become part of the site-determined work "Miniature Landscape for O'ahu" in Kinau Courtyard, 6-9pm.

New York-based artist Darren Waterston gives a gallery talk for his new exhibitionForest Eater. Meet in front of Gallery 29 (upstairs by Luce Pavilion) at 6:45pm to start the tour.

"I don’t know whether it was the weather, the mango pollen (which I’m allergic to), or just something my body decided was long overdue, but I slept a lot this weekend. Going to bed on a First Friday at 8 p.m. is unheard of in “Lacyworld.” But that’s exactly what I did last Friday.

My greatest accomplishment over the weekend was finishing two books: “Three Cups of Tea” and “Like Water for Chocolate.” Both had an overarching “love” element..."

I can stay out all night and dance until my feet are blistered, but by the weekend I am restless and want to go out again. I’m not a psychologist and maybe I’m making an overstatement, but men are so lucky; they seem to have it so easy...

I'm really proud to announce

that I'm back in writing action, with my new column

"The Morning After"

I thought the name was appropriate since I'll be writing it every Monday- the morning after the weekend.

The column is basically a combination of standard journalism

(quotes, interviews, and fact-checked information),

with my first person perspective.

I've always been anti-public blogging unless it was for shameless self promotion. But with this, I can combine my passion for true journalism, with quirky-nesss, then add a lil glitter and we have the perfect combo for either disaster, or a real good time.

I'll be mixing it up with Nights Out with

celebs, scenesters, musicians, & my friends.

What's a VisionBoard?

Basically a VisionBoard is a collage

you can make, using magazine clippings and craft supplies

which symbolize and represent your dreams, and goals.

Your VisionBoard can be focused on your business or personal life.

It can be short term or long term.

It's up to you to create your master piece.

Just remember...

focus on things you truly love and care for.

This is my personal VisionBoard.

I created it with a close friend and mentor, Noelani Love

We created our VisionBoards about a year and a half ago.

Since such time, I can proudly share with you that about 90% of

my dreams came true and goals have been accomplished,

including traveling to Japan.

After months of helping others create their own VisionBoards,

I decided it was time to reach out to more people

by teaching a VisionBoard Workshop monthly.

Rizzo A.K.A. Alyson created a "VisionBox"

She dreams of becoming a DJ.

So she created a piggy bank out of a box,

and glued magazine clippings of pictures and words,

symbolizing her future DJ career and success.

Flash & Matty at Apartm3nt were kind enough- or let's say.. smart enough to let us do an event called DESSERT on August 28th.

The Hot Muffins held it down on the turntables, with special guest
Taryn Manning
and resident DJ Byron the Fur.

With a little glitter, bubbles, and a whole lot of dancing..

The night was a success, and we're stoked for our next DESSERT event in October.

on Thursday, August 26th, 2010
with an amazing PROM theme!

Guests showed up in suits and prom gowns...

The night started off with cocktails, appetizers,

and acoustic soul/R&B music

by Yoza & Randy Allen

A Chinese Dragon Dance performance

was a fun treat & was a positive blessing for the space.

Ladies & gentlemen posed for the camera...

And yes, there was a Prom King & Queen.

The Nocturnal Sound Krew boys held down the house

as every one danced the night away.

Misa Misa Misa !!

One of my favorite jewelry designers

is born and raised island girl

Misa Hamamoto

Her style transcends the typical tropical inspired jewelry.

Although there are hints of her Hawaiian upbringing,

the edgy pieces are modern day pieces made with

quality materials like solid gold and silver and leather.

The method of creating her designs is an

old art form called wax casting.
